The ONLY Super Bowl social media account you need to follow

This Sunday. 6:30 p.m. EST. Finally. For the first time since January 29, 1995, my San Francisco 49ers have made it to the Super Bowl. This is a big deal to me because the sports teams I root for typically don’t make it to the final game (Toronto Maple Leafs last Stanley Cup – 1967) ( Toronto Blue Jays last World Series 1993).

But when any of these teams were last at the big dance, social media was nowhere to be found…it just didn’t exist. Now the non-stop flow of photos, tweets, taunting, scandal, and general nonsense is almost nauseating. ESPN posted an inforgraphic about who to follow on Twitter; Hootsuite has a dashboard where you can track what quarterback has the most tweets, day-by-day; and at last check, social media mega-blog “Mashable” has 144 recent stories tagged “Super Bowl”. It can all be a bit overwhelming.

Don’t get me wrong, the enjoyment of these global events is enhanced by social media. I love being able to connect with fellow sports fans and chat about game. My favourite fan to connect with is the one who is actually there. Enter the Twitter account from the New Orleans Host Committee. If you are looking for one social media touch point for the big game, this is it. The @nolasuperbowl account is entirely focused on fan (user) experience, and they sure are responsive. Powered by a team of over 100 volunteers they field questions, suggest places to eat, share interesting stories about the game, promote their activities (#NFLexperience), and share photos from the festivities.

I’ll definitely be watching the @nolasuperbowl along with the game this weekend with a big thanks to all the volunteers that make it happen. The video below provides a decent idea about what it’s like to be inside the command centre during Super Bowl Week. It’s a recap from last year’s Super Bowl in Indianapolis, but it does a good job explaining what they are looking for, how they find it, and how the team of social media volunteers go about responding.

Talknowledgy Podcast #107: BB10, Ron Swanson’s Movember video, talking trash with athletes on Twitter, and more

Right off the top of the show we discuss BlackBerry 10, Pinterest brand pages, and Facebook’s rumoured job board.

This week’s “Creepy or Awesome?!” is centred on the recent Twitter outrage when big man Pau Gasol from the NBA Lakers missed the last shot of the game handing the historic club yet another early season loss.

Our YouTube Hero this week is Ron Swanson’s pro-Movember video encouraging men to keep growing their “mos” and raise money for men’s health. It also has some guest appearances from cast members from “The Office”.

Finally, a military sex scandal gets our #Hashtag Fail of the Week. That’s right, the sloppy use of email clients may have lead to the infidelity bust in the David Petraeus scandal.

Talknowledgy Podcast #106: Donald Trump, Microsoft, Instagram, and Shoppers Drug Mart All Earn a #Fail

A lot of #fail being handed out this week! Before we get to that, we start with the social media reaction to President Obama’s win in Seg 1, and also touch on Hurricane Sandy and Halo 4.

In our second segment, NBC allows you to buy stuff you see in television shows using a smart phone app – Creepy or awesome? We also take a look at the decidedly not awesome comments made by the CEO of Instagram this week.

In our third segment, Obama is so happy about his win he’s singing about it. It’s our “YouTube Hero of the Week!”

Social media statistics for Movember – It’s a big deal [Infographic]

I’m in! This year I will be growing a Movember moustache. I’ve watched the fun, fundraising, and facial ugliness over the past couple years, and now I want to be a part of it. From the outside, I found it to be a very social thing. MoBros and MoSistas spent the entire month encouraging each other to grow and donate to a great cause…and much of the interaction happens on social media (more on that below).

If you’re new to Movember, here’s how they describe it on their website:

“On Movember 1st, guys register at Movember.com with a clean-shaven face. For the rest of the month, these selfless and generous men, known as Mo Bros, groom, trim and wax their way into the annals of fine moustachery. Supported by the women in their lives, Mo Sistas, Movember Mo Bros raise funds by seeking out sponsorship for their Mo-growing efforts.

Mo Bros effectively become walking, talking billboards for the 30 days of November. Through their actions and words, they raise awareness by prompting private and public conversation around the often ignored issue of men’s health.

It’s been a popular event here at Algonquin College.  Last year, our Radio Broadcasting students led the charge to raise awareness and  a few bucks. They did a great job. Their action, among other things, inspired me to get involved this year. I’ve decided to Captain a team of my own. That being said, I am actively seeking donations for my Movember team: Donate Here. The invitation is also open to join my team: Join Here. We’re totally inclusive, so ALL team members are welcome.

But the most important element of Movember is the work being done for men’s health. We all do it for our own reasons. Perhaps somebody in your life has been affected by prostate cancer. Perhaps you are trying to encourage men to take a more active role in their health and longevity. Perhaps you just like being part of a moustache-growing team dedicated to raising money and awareness. There isn’t a bad reason to join a Movember team.

Now back to looking at Movember through the social media lens. At the end of the 2011 Movember campaign, Radian6 took a look at all the social media conversations focused on Movember. Here’s what they found out:

My 5 favourite fake Twitter accounts [screenshots]

I often try to take a business or educational approach to my posts on http://www.davidhallsocialmedia.com as a way to bring value to readers. But this week, I thought I’d have a bit of fun. When my Talknowledgy (podcast) co-host @PhilGaudreau linked me to a parody Twitter account poking fun at Statistics Canada (Canada’s national statistical agency), I just couldn’t resist trying to find other great fake twitter accounts.

In my books, a good fake Twitter account makes it clear that they are a joke. Sometimes this is done in the username, sometimes in the bio, sometimes in the icon, and all the time in the content of the tweets. It also can’t be too crude or offensive. Granted, some of the accounts below have tweets that made me cringe; for the most part, though, they are pretty harmless. Good fake Twitter accounts should also be consistent in both frequency of post and theme. For example, the @Queen_UK is often tweeting about drinking gin and using the hashtag #GinOclock. The Mitt Romney may tweet a bit much, but it’s often focused on his enormous wealth.

Here are a few favourites:

Statistics Canada – @STATS_CANADA

I love this account because it is full of Canadiana. References to the cold weather, KidStreet, locations, hockey, music, coin currency, and more. It’s also the most consistently tasteful account in this list. With only 440 tweets so far, I’m looking forward to seeing more.

Mitt Romney – @MlTTR0MNEY – Note: The “I” in “MITT” is actually the number “1”

A great satirical look at the Republican Presidential challenger. Mainly poking fun at his wealth and disconnect with the average American, it sometimes also covers republican policies, religion,  current events, etc. This account retweets a lot, which kind of waters-down the content, but it still ranks top 5 for me.

Queen of England – Elizabeth Windsor – @Queen_UK

Lots of people love the Queen, especially in the commonwealth countries. She is often characterized as a teetotaling granny, but this account paints a different portrait. She’s a gin-swilling sarcastic lady who likes to make fun of world figures, including her scandalous grandson, Prince Harry.

John Madden – @fauxjohnmadden 

If you are a football fan, you have suffered through hundreds, if not thousands of Madden-isms over the years. One of my personal favourites was from a Monday Night Football game a few seasons back where he said “A first down is important not just because it’s a first down, it’s a whole new set of downs.” (*facepalm) It’s clear that he doesn’t need a Twitter account to make up silly things to say–he’s full of them! This account is great because it is up-to-date with what’s going on in the world of football, right down to plays in individual games.

Kim Jong-Un – @KimJongUn

I’m not really sure what to think about this one. I like it when the account makes fun of us in western democracies, but poking fun at the turmoil the people go through in North Korea is a bit much.

Want to know some stats about YOUR Instagram account? There’s an app for that.

Since October 2010, Instagram has been one of the fastest-growing social networks in history. By the end of March 2012, it had about 30 million iPhone users, and, since the release of the app on Android, Instagram user numbers have balooned to 80 million.

Like all Android users, I’m new to Instagram but really enjoying the experience. After getting to know the tool a bit, I began to think that it was missing two things. First, a browser-based interface that would allow the user to manage photos, comments, likes, and account settings from a laptop. Instagram users know that almost everything usually has to be done with your smartphone, which isn’t always the easiest task.

The second thing about Instagram that left me wanting more was a lack of stats. Initially, I went searching for the “total views” a photo had received  Knowing this stat would give me an idea of the types of photos my followers are most interested in, and also how successful my sharing tactics are.

After a bit of Googling, I came across Statigr.am – a brower-based app that gives you dozens of stats about your Instagram usage, essentially filling in both of the gaps that were bothering me about Instagram. Statigram helps you keep track of:

  • Reading, posting, and responding to comments
  • Liking photos
  • Following and unfollowing other users
  • The number of photos, likes, comments, and followers you have
  • A month-by-month analysis
  • Your tag usage – i.e. the most popular tags associated with your account
  • The most popular filters you use
  • Your most liked and most commented on images
  • Best time to post
  • Photo lifespan
  • Follower growth
  • And so on…

They even have extra functionality that includes: the ability to create a Facebook Cover image out of your instagram photos, Instagram follow buttons for your website / blog,  an RSS feed,  a public URL, and a toolkit for brands to help them setup and monitor photo contests.

And it turns out that I’m not the only one looking for the functionality and statistics Statigr.am offers: just last week they announced that they have reached the 1 Million user mark and are still growing.
